My Fiction, Bonfire Nights @The Troubadour, Brisbane(14/05/10)

For a band playing their third live show, Bonfire Nights are really freaking good. Consisting originally of Steve Foster on guitar and Ruth Nitkiewicz on drums, the duo have now also enlisted Nicole Hoaran on keys. Like all new bands, there are a few teething issues but the potential is definitely there. The songs are catchy, with great boy-girl harmonies and a real Raveonettes vibe. Give them time to tighten their set and put some more shows under their belt, and they could be the next big thing.
Brisbane’s favourite curly-haired lads, My Fiction give us a preview of their forthcoming debut album and if tonight is anything to go by, it is sure to be packed with fast-paced indie electric goodness. The band have taken a more electro turn compared to their previous EP, whilst still maintaining their knack for writing catchy tunes. Their new single, Gravel Rash And Football Stars is a sure-fire hit whilst crowd favourite Tonight Tonight gets everyone dancing. The hard yards in the studio have obviously paid off, with the band appearing more confident and sounding tighter than ever. At this point in their career, it seems they are trying to break out of the straight indie mould by including more experimental elements in their sound. Whilst not completely refined yet, it seems they are heading in the right direction. They show off their Brit-pop influences by performing Blur’s Country House before ending with new song Shanghai Surprise. They play a fun and enjoyable set and this reviewer eagerly await their new album.
