Goodbye Gangbusters: TTT,VOID, From The South @ Bar 32,Canberra (05/04/2010)

Sadly, last Wednesday night saw a farewell to Gangbusters at Bar 32. Despite the sadness of it being “the end”, there was no sign of tears. Instead – just plenty of beers and many familiar faces to see the show off properly. Seeing the night out was Canberra’s own From The South, the experimental VOID and Melbourne’s punk-pop TTT (formerly known as Tic Toc Tokyo). The night was the start of the amazing TTT’s Landed Tour, with Canberra being the first stop on the way.

This reviewer made an entrance midway through Gangbusters’ first act, From The South. It was a song by the name of Lemon which drew in many faces with it’s clever lyrics and beautiful melody which literally had people staring in wonder. Followed by two delightful tunes to close, Wild Fowl and Nomad 2. We’ll hopefully see this five piece again.

Come 10:30 pm VOID stood before the crowd and before him lay a couple of crates filled with a music tech’s dream supply of musical gadgets. The combination of the bar’s lighting and his set up gave the crowd the impression that this guy was going to be interesting. He used his tools quite effectively; creating an atmosphere out of the room. He even got a bit creative and wrote a song mid show with a bit of help from the audience. Surprisingly, the mixture of “oooos”, “rahhhs” and “blarrrghs” from those in the audience made quite a song.

Coming on at a late 11:40 pm TTT made their way to the band area. The audience had diminished quite drastically but that did not stop the band from coming on enthused and ready to go. Pulling off their winter jackets the band revealed themselves to be a very indie looking bunch of boys.

Getting into it right away the TTT boys showed off their signature sound. Past Histories, Tyranny and Animal were a few songs from the boys repertoire which just seemed to stand out. Their new songs from their debut album Lands showed off the broad spectrum of what we call a genre – it’s uniqueness is definitely demonstrated by the way they use a range of instruments including percussion/drums, trumpet, clarinet, guitar and bass.

TTT is incredibly talented – this was shown on the night via the swapping of instruments, and demonstrating their ability to play the drums quite well. At one stage all three belted it out for a song which was called “the drum machine song”. The band’s vocalist and lead guitarist, Simon Gibbs also showed off his strange talent; using a drumstick to play his guitar.

TTT was the perfect ending to an amazing indie night. On behalf of everybody from the Canberra Fasterlouder team – we will never forget the wonderful night’s we’ve had hanging at Gangbusters.
