Hoodies, caps and Adidas were the dress code for a jam packed Rosemount, a Sunday session with a twist for some, a few beers, another Dockers win, and one of Australia’s finest emcees gracing the stage to keep the carefree, fun filled vibe going into the night.
Kicking off proceedings was Obese Records’ up-and-comer, Mantra who cut through some slick rhymes and fat beats to keep the punters interested. Skipping swiftly through his debut offering Power of the Spoken , the freestyle master was immaculate and had heads bobbing, especially during Triple J spinner I Hereby Stand, nice work.
With a timely intro from DJ El Gusto and the Sneaker symbol shining on the white backdrop, Urthboy bounded on-stage with the lovely Jane Tyrell, to bust out the mighty Spitshine, with the crowd going nuts it could have been a scene from 8 Mile, only a lot cooler with better artists.
Nuthin I’d Rather Do and Modern Day Folk took us back to Urthboy’s past album, The Signal, before Tyrell took over to shine on single Shruggin, she truly is a highlight of the Urthboy experience, even though her vocal during the chorus was a little drowned out this time by the jam packed crowd.
“How you doin’ Perth, you all right?” she asked before we were all invited to Hell, during the awesome track Hellsong, it was quite cool seeing a pub full of fans swaying their arms and being so happy that “we’re all going to hell” before Ready To Go bought the tempo down slightly – not for Urthboy though, he was going right off.
Served saw Gusto venture out to help on vocals and had the crowd bouncing like a big round hip hop ball, before the serious side of the day came through as Urthboy and the crowd embraced to support the ANZACs, dedicating a heartfelt version of No Other.
Gusto took the stage to himself to show off his turntablism and mixing skills, taking a tiny keyboard like mixer and turning the Eurythmics Sweet Dreams into a club banger, it was quite awesome. The crowd were then treated to something for the future, a new as yet unnamed Urthboy song, Let Me Down Easy maybe, it was awesome.
Mantra joined the fun bus back on-stage to perform Fight Fire, before The Signal had the whole crowd going ape-shit, such a fun song and it was obvious the Rosemount was having fun, before We Get Around rounded out an awesome show.
Making hip hop fun and easily digestible, with a little bit of spit-shine and good vibes, we thank Urthboy, JT and Gusto, hopefully it wont be too long before they come back and bounce our worlds again.
