Hoodoo Gurus @ MetropolisFremantle, Perth (22/04/10)

A smoke filled Metro’s Fremantle could have been the scene for a high school reunion for those who graduated in the class of 1979, the older crowd had came out in force to see their favourite band rock out the new and the old, but first up was the local rockabilly juggernaut, The Kill Devil Hills.

Showing off work from their latest album Man, You Should Explode, they were the perfect warm up act. It was unfortunate there was another band to come before the mighty head-liners. The DomNiks rolled out a bluesy pub rock set, which did little to raise a whimper from the crowd.

It took a ridiculous amount of time for the mighty Hoodoo Gurus gear to be set up but finally the lights dimmed and the a Superman like entry theme boomed out the PA. The crowd grew tighter and the Gurus burst into new songs What’s In It For Me? and Ashamed Of Me from their latest album Purity Of Essence.

Dave Faulkner was cool as a cucumber as always, he just looks and presents himself as that guy you’d love to have a beer with. Out The Door was the first older song to have the fans bouncing before delving back into Purity for Are You Sleeping and bringing the tempo down for a more sensitive moment.

Getting through the new stuff early, the hits started coming thick and fast, kicking off with Tojo, which was simply awesome. Brad Shepherd is a true Oz rock god, making his guitar wail at times and wearing the tightest red pants ever imaginable – nice package.

The Hoodoos left Faulkner centre stage to perform a solo rendition of My Girl which had the lovers in the crowd embracing, then came Dont Cry and psychedelic rocker Miss Freelove 69.

The encore brought out the classics, with 1000 Miles getting a guernsey before their finest rocker The Right Time had the small capacity crowd chanting and dancing before I Was A Kamikaze Pilot signalled the beginning of the end.

The Hoodoos bid farewell and were off into the night, leaving punters young and old glad they made it out on a school night for a rockin’ good performance.
