28 Days @ Rosemount Hotel,Perth (03/04/10)
Tue 6th Apr, 2010 in Gig Reviews
For those of us finishing high school in the late nineties, early naughties, it was a night of recollection and a venture back to our youth, as the boys from Bacchus Marsh rolled into town to play feel good teen anthems, one after the other.
Kick starting the night’s proceedings were local hardcore band Break Even, and it was a nice little beginning for the hardcore heads to get their jump on to. Lead scream machine Mark Bawden had them chomping it up as the band rolled through a rather tight set (much tighter than the head-liners).
These guys are like a more melodic, less hectic version of At The Drive In at times which, in any case, is a good thing If you like your music hard and edgy, check these guys out.
As 5 minutes past the 28 Days scheduled start time, the “28 Days can fuck off chant” was in full swing and as the light s dimmed, the boys appeared on stage ready to rock, minus one major player, lead singer Jay Dunne.
As the band scanned the crowd and asked “Where the fuck is Jay?” it appeared that he had met some friends at the bar and was enjoying a few free Jaeger-bombs and beers, true rock n roll style.
After posing for a few fan photos he made his way to the stage and the show was on, “How the fuck are you cunts?” we were greeted before Sucker had the rather small crowd in full swing.
It was like a best of set, all killer no filler and spanning every release in the back catalogue. The band sifted through Sand and passionately bid us Goodbye, but the sound was lacking, and the absence of DJ Jedi shone through on anthems like Say What and Rip It Up which was saved for a mighty encore.
One of the most well received songs of the night was the fun in the sun song What’s the Deal which ended with Dunne requesting another Jaeger bomb or beer from the crowd – these rock stars.
With more on-stage banter than a stand up show, 28 Days are still as fun now as they were way back in the day, even if the music isn’t as tight (they did have a make-shift line up due to Hep’s tongue) they’ll always have their anthems and a swagger of faithful fans, great night by an awesome aussie band.
