The National Gallery of Australia wrapped up it’s Starry Nights series this weekend with the Clare Bowditch Trio on Friday night and the lovely Tim Rogers Saturday night, as part of the Masterpieces from Paris exhibition.
Art lovers and music fans coalesced in the magical Sculpture Garden, transformed into an über trendy bar and music venue where you could have mistaken yourself for being in perhaps Prenzlauer Berg or NoLiTa.
With husband Marty Brown on drums and life-long pal Tim Harvey on guitar the Clare Bowditch Trio played a beautiful, high-energy 90 minute set to the eclectic crowd. Opening with When the Lights Went Down from 2007 album The Moon Looked On the gyspy-clad Bowditch silenced the chatty chardonnay crowd.
Bowditch played a selection of songs covering her back catalogue including the title track from 2004 release Autumn Bone. Her trademark humour and confidence shone throughout the show, especially in Tea and Toast where she dedicated the song to her long-time friend, teapot Frank.
You Keep Running Around the Park kept the crowd on the ball with male and female parts accompanying this rather quirky song.
Lips Like Orange saw a fan plucked from the crowd to have her own special moment in the limelight sharing the stage with Bowditch. Catchy radio hit The Start of War struck a cord with the relaxed crowd with plenty of fans singing along.
During the show, Bowditch thanked the National Gallery ‘For being courageous enough to put on live music’, at which the crowd responded excitedly. Looks like mixing the NGA members mailing list with the indie kids is not a bad idea.
After a quick run off stage to the artists tent, Bowditch returned for a two song encore and again thanked the crowd, acknowledging this was indeed a special night. Keep your eyes peeled for the songstress’ new album to be released this year, Modern Day Addiction.
As the Clare Bowditch Trio headed off stage the DJ’s took over and continued the luscious vibe in the Sculpture Garden while the crowd mingled, refilled their glasses and soaked up the amazing Masterpieces from Paris inspired world.
FasterLouder too would like to thank the National Gallery of Australia for being courageous enough to put on weather dependent live music and we hope this is a sign of things to come!
