On the road: Yves Klein Blue About the Future tour took a pit stop in Perth, playing at Amplifier Bar, supported by Cloud Control and The Scotch of Saint James. Promoting their debut album Ragged and Ecstatic these lovely Brisbane lads rocked the stage with their exciting dance rock and invested energy.

Warming up the stage were The Scotch of Saint James, an enthusiastic four piece with some sick guitar riffs and handful of catchy tunes like Blue Plastic Spoon a jittery rock sound teamed up with some cheesy dance moves is delish for the ears and the eyes.

The bodies started rolling into Amps just in time for Cloud Control. Hailing from Sydney, their sound is a delicate mixture of sweet melodies, hypnotic harmonies and climatic tribal chanting overlaid with the distinctly raw and honest vocals of Alister Wright. The joy in Wright’s face was absolutely contagious! Jumping around barefoot (there was a lot of jumping for joy going on) and communicating to band mates in smiles. It was a real treat to watch audience members sway, stamp their feet, get some upper body movement going – except for the drunk girls that found it fitting music to grind each other to… that got a bit out of control, pun intended.

The clock struck half past ten and the well-anticipated boys from Yves Klein Blue kicked the set with Not What I Want from the Draw Attention to Themselves EP. Their sound can be described as music to enjoy – dance rock, rockabilly, pop country, jazz and indie is all covered. (Think The Clash meets Arctic Monkeys). With fierce magnetic energy, lead man Michael Tomlinson howled into the night. Don’t underestimate his gotta-pinch-that-cheek boyish looks; Tomlinson worked up the crowd, dropped to the ground and totally rocked out playing the guitar on his back.

Sean Cook on bass ripped into Polka as the loud echoing vocals filled the room and shook the walls. “This song is about fantastic sex!” exclaimed Tomlinson, referring to Summer Sheets, ordering everyone to dance in celebration of fantastic sex to the upbeat and tongue in cheek tune. A cover of Lou Reed’s Walk on the Wild Side saw Tomlinson move on to the keyboard and harmonica for a soulful performance. Getting Wise sparked an energetic mosh pit, bodies shifting left to right, supporting a brief semi-successful stage dive, waving excited hands reaching out just to touch the rock star.

Tomlinson’s About The Future solo brought the room to a stand still. Partly because the vocals were drowned by the strong twang of the guitar, the sentiment was still clear, stripped back and honest, proving his flair for lucid lyrics and delivery with impact.

To finish the night Cloud Control came back to share the stage with a lively cover of Tender by Blur. A nice sing along chorus and big band sound made the night simply magic. There was a strong call for an encore but that was it Perth, until next time.
