Spinnerette @ Amplifier, Perth(09/03/10)

“Only one support band? That means more time for Spinnerette!” An excited punter exclaimed outside the doors of Amplifier Bar. In fact, it meant more play time for both Spinnerette and Northam band The Novocaines. Front man Corey Marriott later said it was their “longest set in six months”. It’s unlikely any regular gig attendee in Perth hasn’t already seen The Novocaines at least once, and they performed their typical retro-charismatic set loudly and proudly with barely enough room to rock out on such a tiny stage. It was a wonder one of them didn’t trip, having limited space with Dave Hidalgo Jr.’s drum kit set up directly behind them. But the four-piece successfully managed to keep their cool and hold the attention of a densely packed room for over thirty minutes, performing crowd favourites such as Cup of Coffee and Like A Sunday Morning.
Since the departure of The Distillers in 2006, we feared never seeing Australian-born vocalist Brody Dalle on our stages again, so the arrival of Spinnerette was greatly anticipated. The crowd itself was a healthy ratio of males to females looking forward to having the rock-goddess blow us away with a steady bass line and plenty of guitar.
When the lights went down, fans were left waiting almost ten minutes until the band swept out from the greenroom and onto the stage, sending an aura of ‘cool’ across the room even before they’d struck a chord. At first, Dalle barely acknowledged the crowd, standing in black jeans and an off-the-shoulder tee to show off her tattoos. But before long, they were kicking straight into Bury My Heart from their 2008 EP Ghetto Love, which was precisely when the party started.
Between songs, many cries of “I fucking love you, Brody!” could be heard from amongst the crowd of whom she asked “How many of you guys only know me because I’m Josh Homme’s (Queens of the Stone Age) wife?” Though it seemed Brody had already established a broad fanbase without any help from her husband, her heavy rock vocals and kick-ass attitude were enough to impress a very pleased crowd.
Spinerette performed half their set in sync with their debut self-titled album including Sex Bomb before closing with their popular single Ghetto Love, when a small mosh pit broke out in front few front rows. Despite what Dalle said about her voice early in the night, ‘Shit’ was definitely not an adjective to describe the final performance of the tour in Perth, and was thoroughly enjoyed by most of the night’s audience.
