Gordon Southern enters the venue with a strip of “Police Line – Do Not Cross” tape across the stage of the Rhino Room. I wish the Police were there to take away two of the most annoying audience members. I wouldn’t call them hecklers as such; hecklers can sometimes have something funny to say. These guys wouldn’t shut up and let Southern get on with his show. Unfortunately it also put Southern off his game and the show slightly suffered. He didn’t know how to handle, well, two complete fuckheads. Despite these distracting he had many laughs.

The hour show was based around Borders, eg. Between two countries, the television show Border Security, etc. The show started strongly with a couple of Adelaide based jokes about the shortage of water, and flying in over the city rather than over the sea like apparently every other airport does. This proves Adelaideans can laugh at themselves and not take it all too seriously.

A subject Aussies would be familiar with is sharehouses, especially over in the UK, where Southern is incidentally from. This proved a bit hit from the mainly 20s/30s crowd as many would have experienced living in a shared house at one stage of their life. He even managed to relate the subject of porn under the umbrella of tonight’s topic. This received a big laugh from an older Welsh fellow at the front who had been considerably silent for most of the show. Southern pounced on this to ask him basically his life story.

A highlight was his Border Security type experience when he tried to smuggle chocolates from his wedding back from the UK into Australia. By the way, he is married to a South Australian girl! The story turns Southern from smuggler to hero and ends up reuniting to Border Security sisters that had lost contact with each other years ago. What a top bloke.

Definitely grab a mate and a ticket to this show.

Nobody has hearted this, be the first!
