Loud experimental noise… some people hate it, some people love it. It’s relatively safe to say there’s no in-between, but supporters would have had a tinnitus-inducing great time at Dada’s on Saturday. Featuring two of the best mind-melting bands around; Brown and Injured Ninja, the gig showed that there should be awesome obscure events at Dada’s Garage more often.

Brown were the first band to play and, for this reviewer at least, were the highlight of the evening. Performing a continuous piece of pandemonium, dissonance and rhythm, Brown stunned the intimate crowd for at least forty minutes (though time didn’t seem to matter after a while).

Featuring an assortment of both standard and unusual instruments, they were as fascinating to watch as they were to listen to. Hammering on anything that would evoke sound (stairs, doors, anything they could find…) and constantly producing unexpected sounds from the strangest of devices, Brown are a sextet to be reckoned with, and must be seen to be believed.

Next came Injured Ninja , who finished the job of completely destroying the audience. Amplifiers were set to levels beyond eleven, Injured Ninja often unleashed noise that had audience members covering their ears. With a much more traditional set up than Brown’s, but still powerfully overwhelming, Injured Ninja proved exactly why they’re current favourites of the local noise scene. The astoundingly awesome IDDQD, recently released as a split 12” with French Rockets, finished their set with a colossal boom.

If Dada is capable of putting on such a tremendous show, they must continue doing so. With their impressive performance space, it would be a shame not to. Add some of Perth’s best underground artists and it’s difficult to find a better match.
