When the first support act Cat Black rocked up on stage, the dark little Rocket Room was quiet and empty but after one song it was as full and loud as ever. Cat Black are an interesting combination of crooning vocals and fiery guitars. The female lead singer has an Exene Cervenka vibe but with more jazz power. The band have a bouncy sound, energy-raising riffs and a tendency to make the listener feel like they are floating inside a bubble of ecstasy.
After a short interval, the second support act The Moonlight Wranglers hit the stage with their no frills straight-up intricate rock. They are hardcore with melody which is something seen not very often in the local Perth scene.
When The Bible Bashers started playing, the crowd began cheering. The Bashers are demonic but fun at the same time. The songs are very similar, which is their only flaw, but the crowd never seemed to notice. It was a very entertaining show nonetheless.
The last support act of the night was Mongrel County who, with their vicious sound, both delighted and frightened the crowd. Always a good mix! They rock hard, very hard and make your ears bleed but it’s for a good cause.
The band of the night finally arrived on stage; The Stabs. Coming from Melbourne, they have supported such bands as Lubricated Goat and The Scientists and have toured internationally. Their sound was fuzzy and grunge-influenced. They’ve been compared by some to Mudhoney and The Birthday Party and the Mudhoney reference at least, was spot on. If you like your music loud, distorted and hard than this is the band for you.
It was a great night showing just what a little Australian band can accomplish, an international sound and critical acclaim.
