Arriving at a barren George Street two days after New Years Eve, it seemed most of Sydney was nursing a hangover. The turnout for Tom Ugly and Datarock was also miniscule, as The Metro became a ghost town.

Sydney threesome Tom Ugly gave an enthusiastic performance, lending momentum to the evening. Cult Romance and Roll sounded great; backed up by lively moves.

Norwegians Datarock must have felt out of place playing to the intimate crowd, but the roar they received belied the numbers. The night commenced with Give It Up from 2009’s Red, followed up by True Stories and Dance!. There was a grand sing-along to Nightflight to Uranus, with Ketil Mosnes throwing himself into the crowd and strutting away on the saxophone (one of many accelerated solos from the man).

Singer Fredrik Saroea had fun singing to the crowd as he bought various members of the audience onto the stage to assist on vocals. Fa, Fa, Fa got everyone going, summing up the rowdy ethos of the evening.

The highlight of the evening came with the final tune, Dirty Dancing’s torch song Time Of My Life; complete with the film-clip playing in the background as the song belted out the speakers. It was a very interactive evening well worth attending, even if New Years may have been too much of a big one for many.

Nobody has hearted this, be the first!
