Single Twin @ A warehouse inFairfield, Melbourne(18/12/09)
Sun 20th Dec, 2009 in Gig Reviews
I live in Fairfield. There’s not much happening in Fairfield. We are close to Northcote so there is an out, but Fairfield itself isn’t really the hub of anything. Not music, No bars. It’s nice and quaint. Or to put it another way it’s quiet.
So hearing rumours of a gig taking place in a warehouse in Fairfield, sort of had me pinned from the start. What also had me interested was that the rumoured gig was the EP launch of Single Twin, the new musical wonderings from Marcus Teague.
Well my friends, this rumoured gig was real and intimate and has revealed a hidden gem in the middle of an abandoned industrialized desert. One of Melbourne’s most lovely and enchanting folk men, Marcus Teague, of Deloris fame, launched an EP for his latest project Single Twin, in stunning warehouse in Fairfield land.
Perfect candle light and vintage lounges made this unique performance feel like a chilled out Friday evening at a friends place. As wanderers filter through the door, indie-pop duo Denim Owl, fill the space with their synth driven tunes. A soft rendition of The Boss’s I’m On Fire, brought a sea of smiles across the room. Though admittedly under rehearsed, these pop kids seemed to keep the uber relaxed audience entertained and cheery.
Enter Single Twin. Performing with his four piece band, Single Twin is the apparent aftermath of five years work for Marcus Teague writing and playing in bedrooms and living rooms, mostly behind closed doors. Anyone who knew of Deloris will know that Teague has the sort of voice you could listen to for a very long long time and tonight is no exception. This man’s poetic capabilities matched with some fine melodies, left not a whisper to be heard in this amazing space.
Single Twin is strongly lyrically driven but partner this with a unique and surreal space, haunting melodies and some of the kindest faces I’ve seen for quite some time, this gig stands out as one of the years most charming. Teague is a magnificent songwriter and story teller. Get To Love You, a stand out track of the evening, highlights the anecdotal story’s and lyrics expected from the forthcoming album, to be released early 2010.
Keep an eye on Single Twin- he’s back and wonderful and well worth watching. Oh, and Fairfield- it’s sort of not so bad anymore.
