Yacht Club DJs, PurpleSneakers DJs @ Ding DongLounge, Melbourne (7/11/09)

You could have powered Melbourne from the amount of energy in the room at Ding Dong Lounge last Saturday at the Yacht Club DJs set. At the end everyone had shed at least 10 pounds of weight in sweat and Ding Dong was destroyed. I have not had so much fun since last week’s episode of Glee.
The Yacht Club DJs are a tag team of DJs form Ballarat, of all places, who mash (or smash) anything and everything. In the process, they make Girltalk look like an insipid mashed potato to their outrageous bubble and squeak. They have created quite a following over the past year with legend of very loose behaviour. They stayed true to form.
The YCDJs were ably supported by their friends the Purple Sneakers DJs, who played a fun, if slightly predictable indie-dance set. There were no surprises, but there were also no disappointments.
People were initially neatly coiffured, wearing their Saturday best. By close of business, there were 50 people on stage, women were sweating (not glowing), dudes were shirtless and sweating, there was condensation dripping from the roof and people’s shoes were grimy beyond recognition. And, there had been crowd surfing atop an inflatable replica of the Endeavour. As an aside, your intrepid reviewer had his singlet removed and flung across the room never to be seen again. The night ended with the lads giving away copies of their aptly named album, Kleptomania.
It would be beyond the capacity of most reviewers to give you a vaguely decent list of tracks mashed-up. First, there were too many. Secondly, I lost my shit and danced a storm: it was impossible not to. To give you a rough idea there was Dario G with its infamous mid-nineties track Sunchyme, Blink182, The Strokes, Bonnie Tyler, Missy Elliot, the Isley Brother’s Shout, various other cheesy 90s hip hop numbers, recent indie kids and anything ever released between the 1960s and 7 November 2009.
It was a crowd full of lovers who wanted to dance. One could wander through the crowd dancing with all and sundry safe in the knowledge the worse thing that would happen would be a sweaty hug. The only downer was trying to get a cab home and walking down Smith Street while being shirtless. You must see the YCDJs. If they clash with another act at one of the myriad festivals they’re playing at over the summer, see them. No doubt.
