With the sun firmly set in one of the most beautiful settings our city has to offer, a healthy, close to sold out, crowd was alight with fine wines, good vibes and ready for a dose of Soul food. With Seal touring his newer Soul album, this was to be a royal feast.
Jumping onstage, backed by a seven piece band, including the most awesome three piece, all female, horn section, the extremely tall Seal sank into some fantastic soul covers. Dressed all in black, he looked the part and seemed to be loving every moment of the evening.
Its Alright had the crowd up and clapping along, before UB40’s awesome track Here I Am (Come And Take Me) washed a sense of wellbeing over all in attendance. Get It Together was executed midway through one of the covers, adding a touch of the man’s lengthy own material.
The second part of the show was a little more upbeat, the strobe lights kicked in and the vibe went up a notch. Secrets was fantastic, Seal getting his groove on with members at the stage front. Next up was Lets Go Perth before kicking into The Vision which, with the crazy fast arm waving, was just a little too Euro Vision.
Bringing the soul back to the night was the crowd highlight Kiss From a Rose one of his biggest hits, and it sounded quite lovely. The stage then turned into something like a bush doof rave; deep driving bass lines, flickering strobes, lights and lasers, it was time for the song most people had come to see; Crazy.
Seal prowled the stage, as everyone rose to their feet, it was amazing seeing a song we had all grown up with. Sometimes Seal even let the crowd take over the lead, before leaving the stage as the final chorus wound down. After a short break, Seal reappeared to belt out a few more.
Amazing from 2007’s awesome System kicked off the encore, before soul standard People Get Ready sounded out. As revellers made their way to the exit, the consensus was that it was so much more than an Amazing night, it was Crazy. The new man of Soul definitely got Perth’s Seal of approval.
