Space Invadas @ The Toff,Melbourne (19/11/2009)

Unlike the classic 1980’s arcade video game of the same name, when I went to the Toff the other night to catch Space Invadas’ debut live performance, it thankfully didn’t result in an attack from a two dimensional alien life-force.
Space Invadas, which is comprised of acclaimed UK soul singer Steve Spacek and hip-hop guru Katalyst instead put on a soulful and rather enjoyable performance.
Space Invadas’ music is a unique creature, simultaneously futuristic yet somewhat retro, and it is drenched in sci-fi undertones, with Katalyst’s synthy beats creating a platform for Spacek’s smooth vocals, and the Toff was the perfect venue to showcase this musical collaboration.
Backed up by a four piece band, Space Invadas delivered a great show, mesmerising the crowd with their trance-y sound, a sound that seemed to me to be like what Seal would sound like if he was in a Faithless cover band (take some time to think about that idea, it’s sounding pretty good isn’t it?)
Stand out tracks for the night included current single The Life, Original, Super Seeker, Don’t You Get It, and the very fittingly tiled track Sci-Fi, which had a rich, lush soundscape, full of haunting electronica and reverb that was reminiscent of the musical stylings of Prince.
After such a great performance, I can’t wait for Space Invadas debut album to be released early next year, and when it does, I strongly recommend that you check it out.
