There’s a level of certainty that comes when attending a Gangbusters now. Creator Warwick Smith has worked long and hard to earn the reputation the night is gaining. Known for it’s mash of local and interstate artists, this time was particularly eventful because the major coup for the evening was none other than Melbourne’s Crayon Fields.

The first spot of the night went to local lads Teddy Troubles. While their sound wasn’t particularly groundbreaking, the concentration and level of honesty in their sound showed sincerity. While a step away from generic sound and wandering in lo-fi can end brilliantly, there’s a significant difference between playing in your room and playing a live venue with a packed out bar looking on. Having said that, Teddy Troubles not only fitted the mood, but also acted as a brilliant prelude to second act of the night, Jonny Telafone.

The set began roughly for Jonny Telafone with sound problems plaguing him, and a loss of confidence showing early on because of it. Blending melancholy, garage sounds and some simple production, Jonny Telafone is not one to be tagged as just another local support. Smith took a break from running around and slung on a guitar to make the set complete, and when things started to improve in the third song, the set really took off. Though only a five songs long, a definite impression was made and even the surliest of punters had their heads nodding in unison.

The low point of the night came between sets when what was easily half of the venue left. This is assumedly due to the fact that the majority of the punters were friends of the support bands, but it leaves a bit of concern for what happens to nights like Gangbusters if there’s not enough interest for interstate gigs.

Crayons Fields was everything the remaining attendees could hope and then some more. Their naïve pop is like cheesecake for the ears, and their perfect mixing of songs from their 2006 debut Animal Bells along with newbies from this years All the Pleasures of the World made this band truly stand out as ones to keep an underground eye on. The highlight was a unique semi rendition of the Harry Nillson’s Everybody’s Talkin. Bar 32 proved to be the perfect venue. There was a perfect amount of room for the night to be intimate, but not so much so that you could hear the security stacking the furniture and waiting for people to leave, like other local venues.

Gangbusters is on the first Thursday of each month.
