The rain had left the harbour city early, there was no breeze and it was the perfect night for the hometown favourite to seduce the Freo faithful. Bob Evans couldn’t have found a more appropriate venue to show off his finest tunes from his “Suburban” albums trilogy.
The night was not only a concert but something of a Later With Jools__esque__ insight into the man and his songs, with the – œsmooth as silk’ rumbling voice of Lucky Oceans as the quiz master and extremely excellent slide guitarist.
A surprise to kick things off was Someone So Much and Jebediah-penned tune Harpoon before he delved into stories of how he first fell in love with music, watching Fame. Luckily, there were no Fame covers, but Sadness And Whisky had the crowd swaying.
Kevin Mitchell’s country twanged persona, Bob, was dressed to the T, the black and red check shirt, skinny jeans and freshly polished shoes added to the country feel. Hand Me Downs brought the first of the radio friendlies, as he added that being the youngest of three, he lived in hand me downs.
Its quite an experience to be in such an historic venue (Freo Art Centre Courtyard) watching two unbelievable musicians, Evans’ harmonica was on song to CD-like sounds, and Oceans’ slide sent shivers, it was that good.
The Great Unknown and For Today took us deeper into the album tracks, the latter a request from Oceans because he liked the chord structure, before Friend had everyone truly believing, they were indeed, Evans’ friend.
Don’t You Think Its Time rounded out the first set before the lads returned to the stage to cover Paul Kelly’s From St Kilda To Kings Cross, which he will be recording shortly for a PK tribute album (yippee).
The night was complete with a boppy feel-good airing of Darling, Wont You Come. The crowd stood as one and Bob Evans had left the building, An immaculate performance in a beautiful setting, what more could a music lover ask for?
to listen to their music now on
