As I continue on through my quest to see all those performers that I should have been to see a long time ago but never quite got round to, I find myself at two distinct poles post the experience. They either exceed my wildest expectations or fail dismally to impress me one iota. There just doesn’t seem to be a middle ground, or maybe I am just a black and white kind of guy. There was all white on Saturday night at The Gov with the legendary You Am I living up to the legendary status they have been labelled with.
There was perhaps a bit of help with the choice of support bands. Local Adelaide lads No Through Road started proceedings and captured the crowd’s attention, allowing the incomparable Dave Graney and the Lurid Yellow Mist, in full rock and roll mode, to dazzle at least half the punters with those anthems which have become such a part of the bluesy rock landscape ruled by this four piece. Only half you say? Aussie crowds are tough and though the Mount Gambier lad and entourage were in fine form, the crowd were there for one thing and one thing only – the tsunami that is Tim Rogers with You Am I.
I have always associated Tim Rogers with those laid back tracks like Heavy Heart, Purple Sneakers, etc and while the rock tracks were there, they just didn’t raise to the same level. Well that was before, because this was a rock extravaganza, nothing slow, sweet or sentimental here at all and Tim Rogers preached, cajoled, wailed but most of all presented a magnificent set of old and new tracks, seamlessly interwoven with no apologies for the new and full reverence to the old. They weren’t shy to throw in a few covers too, with a Magic Dirt cover and starting the night with none other than Regurgitator’s classic Sucked A Lot Of Cock – the rendition of which would have brought applause from Ben and Kwan themselves.
Basically this is not a bunch of has-beens trying to flog off some new wares, just because they have been around for sixteen years, doesn’t mean one shouldn’t latch on to them now. Tim is another example of a hard living hard rocking Australian rock icon who somehow seems to stay true to the dream and keeps on putting it out there for all to enjoy, as I’m sure he will continue to do for years to come.
