You Am I are at the point of the career where they don’t have to play all the hits to satisfy the crowd. The last two times I have see them they have hardly played any hits at all and managed to pull of a a killer show.
In typical good humour this gig started with a song about longevity in the music industry – a cover of Regurgatator’s I Sucked a Lot of Cock to Get Where I Am. Tim Rogers was in fine form tonight with all his rock star posing and self indulgent banter with the audience. Some people don’t like his cockiness and bravado, but I just see it as full filling his role as a rock star, and he has every right to pose and to strut like he owns the place because he’s earnt the right.
The one song that made me feel nostalgic was Sound as Ever from their killer album from years ago because it was at the Prince of Wales that You Am I popped my rock and roll cherry. I remembered going to the old Prince where the carpet was sticky there was a sense of danger in the air. It was a place where all the gutter trash rock pigs would congergrate and share that same feeling unity; a piece of community like only Melbourne could offer to shy virgin rock pig from the suburbs.
The rest of the night they belted through hits such as the classic How Much is Enough and a smattering of new ones such as Gunslinger and the pearler It Aint Funny How We Talk Anymore. The night ended with the classic track Cathy’s Clown which brought the house down, I left elated and drowned in sound.
Only You Am I can make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside as well making me scream at the top of lungs like a twelve year old girl.
