Hilltop Hoods hold a special place in the hearts of many. They were the first Australian hip-hop act that earned the grudging respect of the mainstream rock-loving naysayers. Against harsh criticism, they just kept plugging away until we slowly came to the realisation that this was actually great music.

Seeing them live was a real treat; they rhymes flow effortlessly from their mouths and they jump higher than any grown man has the right to; bouncing around the stage without dropping a single word.

The set was flawlessly delivered and the crowd lapped up every second. Their accents were uncontrived and natural, with no ridiculous quasi-American lilt or “gangsta” allusions. They did that thing where they sing the end of each other’s sentences that in the Beastie Boys is so annoying, but when the – œHoods do it, it somehow just made the words flow.

The other thing Hilltop Hoods do remarkably well is sample. Where they find their awesome musical snippets for The Hard Road and Nosebleed Section is a mystery, but they collection of obscure records would be fascinating to peruse. Of course there were samples of known songs too, at one point the tell-tale sound of Led Zeppelin’s Whole Lot of Love pumped through the speakers, covered by a female voice, but none-the-less, demonstrated how two styles of music can be fused together to create something new and exciting.
