There is definitely something sexy about $5 student nights at the Rosemount.

Nobody knows what the sexy thing really is though. It might be the revamped menu, with cheap specials, or the spunky DJ who plays early nineties grunge, and has big, glittery, Mickey Mouse looking headphones. It might be the awesome, polite and nice Scottish security guard, who seriously pisses all over the sour grunts you find in Northbridge, or it might be simply that they have put in lots of effort finding the best of the Perth independents to come play, several days of the week.

Though most people were in the funky beer garden, Harms Way opened for an enthused crowd. The band who claim they do not need any further motivation to play than free booze, trashed their way though the angry, but loveable riffs channelling the late Cliff Burton, and making a bitter old music critic warm at heart.

The Sixth Extinction played an acoustic set due to an injured drummer (Geoff Callaghan) but the lack of percussion was not a handicap for the band who played ballads in an harmonic, acoustic fashion. Easily one of the more creative sets seen to date, and well pulled off.

Still Water Claims was a bloody awful listen. The musicians did a great job with what they had, but their singer was so far off key it was painful to listen. He did have a good voice, and the band had a great sound, but when it sounds like they are playing two different songs simultaneously, the holistic impression is crap.

Southern rockers Homebrewe were the last ones on, and they did something different compared to their usual gigs. They treated it like a jam session. Scene acrobatics exceeded, and a quick improv session, with audience input, which ended up in the somewhat unorthodox but catchy song Fuck yeah, Pussy yeah! made the whole show they put on a memorable experience.

Again, Homebrewe have shown that they are all about the fun of playing, and that alone is enough to make them pro. See them again soon at Amplifier (not Rosemount, X-press had it wrong), presented by Fasterlouder on November 6th, when they launch their new album My Own Nemesis
