Love of Diagrams @ The JadeMonkey, Adelaide (04/10/09)

This is going to be a short review unfortunately as Love Of Diagrams, in particular Antonia Sellbach (vocals, bass), was experiencing sound problems with her guitar. ( Monika Fikerle on drums, and Luke Horton on vocals and guitar complete the band). So the set lasted a whole 25 or so minutes, which was obviously disappointing to all. They valiantly tried to fix the problem, even borrowing equipment from the previous band, but that didn’t help.

In all about 6 or 7 songs received an airing including the brilliant new single Forever, Look Out, The Pyramid, as well as a couple of new tracks from the new album (which is also available on VINYL – woohoo!). Sound problems aside, the set was up to expectations. The crowd listened with awe, eyes fixated on the band like they were in a trance, oft nodding along to the catchy melody that featured under the layers of distorted guitars.

Love Of Diagrams will never sell thousands of records, nor do I think they want to either. They are following the path of what they love – producing their version of experimental and often angular rock. They are like the bastard child of Sonic Youth for the naughties, but with a bit more melody. If you unsure about the band skip straight to their second album Mosaic (2007) as their debut was mainly instrumental. It contains their so called – œhit’ single The Pyramid, but I doubt they even care for hit singles or whether they receive rotation on the commercial radio.
