Terror, Stick to Your Guns andAgainst @ Tuggeranong YouthCentre, Canberra, (9/10/09)
Mon 12th Oct, 2009 in Gig Reviews
It was hard even for the stone-faced hardcore crowd to keep the excitement a secret when LA hardcore kingpins Terror came to town. With support from Orange County kids Stick to Your Guns and Brisbane’s Against, the boys made sure it was a night to remember for the excited crowd.
Against are possibly one of the most successful hardcore bands to come out of the Brisbane area having toured with bands such as Madball, Cro-Mags, Boysetsfire and Caliban throughout their eight year history. Putting the fire inside the hardcore scene these boys are partly responsible for Brisbane’s thriving hardcore scene. Against made their way through a punishing set proving to the crowd that without them, the Brisbane scene would have no bones. Finishing up their blistering set with My Hate, My Choice off their EP of the same name, the boys had the crowd heating up windmill style, ready for Stick to Your Guns to take the stage.
Gearing up the already charged crowd, Stick to Your Guns let rip with tearing vocals and an incredibly infectious energy. Kids were flying around the room obviously enjoying the tunes STYG served up.
The Tuggeranong Youth Centre is fast becoming the Canberran Mecca for hardcore shows due to its ability to cater for the all-ages crowd and the fact that without a stage, it means the fans have the opportunity to get up close and personal with their idols. However the size of the venue isn’t really conducive to the macho shows of affection that some of the fans inflict upon the rest of the crowd. At the risk of sounding like a nanna I won’t go on too much but it is really hard to watch a band you adore when there are arms and legs flying at your face. It’s also hard to watch small girls being trampled on and barrelled over just because some dick-bag wants to show how passionate, dedicated and awesome he is.
Promoting positive aggression, the boys from Terror seemed to notice that things were reaching boiling point, although they were fuelling the fire by encouraging circle pits in a room no bigger than your average lounge room, they warned the kids to tone down the hostility and look out for thy brother.
Vocalist Scott Vogel was on the same level as fans throughout the show, literally. He spent the show pacing the floor with his young fans and giving them free reign over the microphone. He was vocal in his opinions on bands with egos, telling the crowd that they shouldn’t let someone take the stage who thought they were better than the fans, because without the fans, a band would be nothing.
Sticking to the age old adage, ask and ye shall receive, Terror didn’t mess about after the final song of their set, they had the crowd screaming for ‘one more song’ and were happy to give the crowd what they wanted.
