Some people may be on holidays right now, but there is simply no rest for the wicked! It seems that all work and no play doesn’t make Tom a dull boy!
Second to last night on his EP tour, Tom Ugly ensured his show in Canberra was one to remember since we were so kind to him last time. Tom Ugly’s previous show Transit Bar back in July, coincided with his 18th birthday and this time it coincides with his graduation from Year 12. In the words of Ugly himself: “You’re a F*^#!~ / lucky bunch of people aren’t ya?”
While he was in town for Transit’s monthly Pyramid night, local sensation The Trivs were there for the ride. The boys delivered a satisfying and stellar set as they showcased material off their debut EP For Your Health.
To set the mood and ambience for the night was local DJ Celebrity Sex Tape, who ironically is The Trivs manager. Therefore he knew the exact tunes to play to acquire punters to give their tastebuds a shot of The Trivs. Now that fans were ready for what was in stall for the evening, from the moment go, they were shaking their hips and banging their heads back and forth to the catchy guitar licks and drum beats that have made The Trivs so popular.
From their performance last Thursday night it was easy to see why they won the Canberra leg of the National Band Competition this year. They have mastered their performance into a winning formula of Beatle-ish guitar tunes and Jebediah backing beats and vocals that means that no-one can escape their irresistible allure now.
They proved to be the perfect warm-act for Tom Ugly as a majority of the kids on the dance-floor were leftovers from their set that were about to be eaten by the headline act!
Unfortunately, the crowd weren’t swallowed fully until towards the end of their set when Roll Again, Cult Romance and All I Wanna Know came out. This seemed to dwell on the main-man as for the first half of the set he kept yelling out: “C’mon Canberra, I think you can do better than that!”
The crowd warmed up mid-way through the set, when the dance-floor went from moderate to packed and when fans couldn’t resist the charms of the front-man climbing on top of the drum kit and yelling his lungs out. After whipping out the hit singles off his debut EP, he had now got the audience where he wanted them to be and relished it with: “That’s what we want! That’s what I’ve been waiting for!”
At a tender age of 18, Tom seems to posses all the skills and capabilities of someone 5 or 10 years his senior. No wonder media has tagged him as the next Daniel Johns!
With Triple J, the Government and fans on his side already, after only an EP, I wonder what he’ll have when his debut album comes out?
