It’s on. Supporting acts Young Revelry, Cabins and Shaman Son have already set the scene at MUM; leaving a starry-eyed Sydney crowd hovering around the stage like ravenous seagulls waiting for chips to be thrown.
Except this time, Ghostwood are the feed. And really, who can blame us for wanting another ear-orgasmic set-list fix similar to their recent Beach Road Hotel, 77, Hoey and Fringe Bar offerings?
The lovely ghost lads open with Stargazer, creating an ethereal atmosphere for the chilled-out crowd (which is soon to be smeared by a small fraction of testosterone induced drunkards grabbing females they’ve mistaken for call girls).
Next came a newbie track titled What Have I Become and it is evident Ghostwood’s London trip did them a world of good. A much more developed sound is exuded; and while the instruments are played tight, the pedals produce a chaotic, hazy feel matched by frontman Gabriel Navidzadeh’s colourful vocals. Overall, there’s an assortment of perceived influences, ranging from Madchester scene icons The Stone Roses mixed in with Jeff Buckley voicing and Cobain-esque vocals.
Similarly, the subsequent track A Town of Noble…London is being received with enthusiastic praise. Despite Ghostwood’s art of subdued performance, the morons dispersed throughout the crowd are really beginning to bear an undesirable mark in the audience.
By the time the fourth track Be a Part of Something comes around – which is frigging gun, mind you! – some zombie’s persistent fascination with Gabby’s microphone cuts the set short. To his detriment, the mic stand collapses and an ever ballsy Gabby reacts by splashing a well-deserved glass of water on the said offender. Fortunately, no gear is blemished and the show goes on. Hell yeah.
As the fifth track approaches, Gabby announces Rest My Soul will “be our last song for the night.” It’s a feel-good, cruisy track layered richly with melodic guitar lines ( Paddy Harrowsmith ), solid drumming ( James West ), thick bass ( Tom Crandles ) and infectiously haunting vocals.
Although Ghostwood put on a musically stellar performance, witnessing Gabby throw water on the town idiot was equally entertaining. “It’s all just fun,” Gabby shares offstage. Maybe if his Fender got damaged there would’ve been some bitterness.
For now, there are better things to come. Keep your eyes peeled and your ears tuned for an exclusive 7” release of Rest Your Soul next month. The kids are staying ashore indefinitely to record new material and bless us with Sydney indie goodies (and not all of their gems will be whored on MySpace, mind you).
Make sure you catch their next show this September 30th at The Golden Sheaf in Double Bay. For everyone’s sake, let’s hope a bright and breezy crowd is attracted.
