Starting off tonight Yama Boy fills the room with swirling keyboard sounds and crooning vocals. As a one person band the music could almost be described as understated, if not for the thumping drum machine beats which accompany it. Still it’s a fairly gentle journey, complimented by the river mural painted on the stage wall behind him.

As Quan takes the stage, he apologises that he will be following such beauty with his brutishness. In typical Quan style this is partly true, but mostly taking the piss. Sure tonight’s performance is a bit rough around the edges, but Quan’s lyrics are too clever and the show too much fun to ever be described as brutish.

And fun is what this show is. As well as singing Quan plays guitar and keyboards throughout the night and is joined by Catharina on drums and backing vocals. Even though all the other instruments are sequenced the interaction between these two injects a lot of energy into the performances and keeps the craziness of a live show. This is particularly on display in Mouthing Off For No Good Reason. Catharina steps out from behind the kit to take over keyboards and as the song finished the two traded licks back and forth, until it all fell apart in a glorious mess.

On the other hand there are the video projections behind them which match every song and add a level of effort and professionalism most two piece bands wouldn’t bother with. Other highlights of the night include remixed versions of Are You That Beat? and Reading The Script and the pop punk of OMG! When it came to The One, Quan offered us a choice of the normal version or a “really Gay 80’s remix”. Naturally we chose the remix.

The only weird thing about the night was the criminally small size of the crowd, especially considering how much everyone there was enjoying themselves. By the end of the show all were joining in the chants of Another Day and Gimme Gimme. Hopefully by the next time he tours word will have spread and Quan will get the audience he deserves.
