The Waterslides are arguably the most entertaining act on the Adelaide circuit. They have some catchy hooks and a ridiculously eclectic mash up sound reminiscent of The Avalanches and Gerling. Unfortunately they deserved more than the sparse crowd that greeted their opening early timeslot and this is something The Gov and the gig organisers should really amend for future events.

Indie dance troupe The Cassette Kids were a solid stylish outfit with a great singer and tight rhythm section. Their guitarist is especially talented going beyond the basics to add a extra texture to the quartet’s sound. The act’s professionalism is unquestionable and they really take to the big stage well. The sound is strong, polished and their presence is slick with a perfect indie dance look, no doubt helped by the blonde front woman standing out against her band mates with predictable dark scene-hair. Unfortunately despite their strong sound and image, their lack of multiple major stand out hooks will hinder their ability to break through. The increasingly congested dance rock scene is making competition tighter and the headline act a lot better.

Right from the get go there was a great crowd response to Grafton Primary. Superb lighting and on stage display really enhanced the experience and is a reminder of how good The Gov is as a venue. The three-piece appear the best exponents of powerful synth-pop going around in Australia. The quality of the key work leaves bigger acts in their wake and they know exactly when to swap between lush ambience and searing riffs when needed. The Korg synth bass for Records for the Righteous hit the spot although in general the act appear to have the best synth set up on the live electro scene. The act know how to keep a dance floor moving and their huge sound will ensue their reputation will continue to rise. Definitely an act on the way up.
