Few bands have such a die hard fan base as Jebs; Arriving half an hour or so after doors opened, there was still a line 200 metres long down the road, even though there was a large “Sold Out” sign at the front of the queue. People in the line had come from as far away as Bunbury and had been lining up as early as 5pm. This would prove to be an epic night.
Kicking off were the Preytells, who had some fantastic melodies and got the crowd moving. The Leap Year kept things moving with some heavy, heavy bass shaking the Mojo’s munchkins. The Leap Year have an all star look; Zia McCabe plays guitars and the guy from Urge Overkill sings up front, or maybe it was all in this reveiwer’s head, excellent sounds none the less.
The local behemoth that is Jebediah entered stage right, and the excitement was unreal, Mr Kevin Mitchell made a quick apology for the $15 cover charge before launching into Lino. It was like they had never been gone; the band were in fine nick and looked to be loving every minute of it.
Animal revved things up a little, several bottles of water were requested and delivered by some incredibly sexy crowd members, _Its Over , No Sleep, Yesterday and Monument came in quick succession, Banter between the band and crowd kept things jovial, and you could see, especially from the bouncy bassist, Vannessa Thornton, that it was good to be back.
The most fantastic news of the night was that a new Jebediah album is locked in for 2010. From it, Comet got a showing and the crowd lapped it up. Please Leave had the “accidentally screw up your life again” sing along in full voice. NDC and Braxton Hicks track More Alone had people gasping for drinks, and the band as well, Mitchell even requested a “red bull and a mars bar” to kick on with the show.
The first highlight of the night arrived with Feet Touch the Ground. Such an emotion ridden song -and the performance did it justice, Mitchell even mentioned how “crazy” the Fremantle crowd was. The dancing shoes in the crowd were in evidence for First Time when the first few rows of the audience commenced their own little dosey-do.
To Your Door kicked off the encore section of the show, yet Jebs were having too much fun to realise, Even having to re-play Leaving Home after Mitchell forgot the 2nd verse lyrics. It was evident the audience had grown up shouting “You can work it out, were leaving home!” The enthusiasm went up another notch and the crowd turned into a jumping castle, it was fucking awesome.
Getting deeper in the set, and boozier by the minute (thanks to the crowd relaying drinks to the stage), 7 Signs and Harpoon slowed the pace enough for the smallest of breathers, before Fall Down and Jerks Of Attention rounded out one of the finest nights Fremantle rock/pop fans have seen.
Thank you Jebediah, thank you so very much.
