The American band, despised by the ARIA is currently touring Australia with their newest album Evisceration Plague. After having their records restricted or banned from commercial stores in Australia for nearly a decade, the guys who have been playing for over 2 decades are free to roam down under. Before someone has a go at Australian Censorship, ARIA is not alone in shunning the American death metallers. They have been banned from performing certain songs in Germany and former U.S. senator Bob Dole have stated that they undermine the character of the United States.
This all sounds really promising, right?
The warm ups were local and a-ok, starting with Nails of Imposition, who have had a few good gigs lately and warmed up for legends Morbid Angel earlier this winter. They have only been playing since November last year, so this band has already gone far in their quest for fame. On their MySpace page they describe themselves as “an abortion” which is unfair, as they are probably not even half as horrible. It is loud, it is aggressive, it is a sensory mind rape that leaves you trembling, but not half as bad as getting your insides scraped out by a medical practitioner. Guitarists Val Macukat and Chris Henderson were particularly impressive as they kicked off angry riffs with visible passion throughout the sets.
Second warm up was Perth-band Grotesque, not to be confused with much older same-named Swedish band. Their set was equally aggressive, but there was another muso whose performance was stellar; Simon Muller on bass looked like a new Robert Trujillo (Sucidal Tendencies, Ozzy Osbourne band, Metallica etc.) when he was standing, with his bass on his knees rocking back and forth while spewing out angry riffs. The man has the moves of a pro. Grotesque had a bit more melody on stage than Nails of Imposition; not too surprising, given their extra years of experience.
There was about half hour break after Grotesque where the riggers rigged the stage and the punters got their beverage on, spoke to the nice representatives from Sea Shepherd (an organisation of heavy music lovers who dedicate time and money to sink whaling ships) and leaving ridiculous amounts of cash in the merch stand.
Anticipation was high when Cannibal Corpse finally entered the stage. Cannibal Corpse claim that – œtheir mission is to transcend and manipulate the boundaries of death metal’ – but it seems that they are way too childish to do so. When singer George Fisher declared that one of the songs was about “shooting blood out of your cock” we had to wonder if he’d seen his doctor about it. When he dedicated Fucked with a knife to “all the seven pussy in the room”, at least one pussy in the room wanted to sneak back stage and ask sweetly how long it had been since the last time he got some action.
Do not misunderstand – Cannibal Corpse is a wicked sounding band, but it’s sometimes good not to be able to understanding their lyrics, which seem to be provocative for the sake of being provocative. There is no intent, no purpose, no will in this, it is like when little kids tell their parents to fuck off, someone wearing a t-shirt excluding fat chicks or someone masturbating in a public space. It is extremely satisfactory for the one doing the jerking off, but the rest of the population scratches their head wondering what the fuck is going on.
