The night started off with an acoustic performance from Damian Crosbie, whom many people recognised as the front man from Perth’s own The Panda Band. Only a handful of punters witnessed an amazing acoustic performance of the songs that first got this dynamic band noticed.
It was really Sydney’s Philadelphia Grand Jury that stole the show and got the crowd dancing. As the Philly Jays got further into their set, more people arrived. There was a lot of heckling from the crowd but the band took it all in their stride. Their most famous song to date, Going to the Casino was the song that really won the crowd over, as the dance floor was full of people dancing and jumping to the infectious indie beats. They finished their set in style with an insane drum solo from Dan W Sweat, who gave away his drum sticks to some lucky punters.
It evident that the crowd were here for one band, Dappled Cities who were in Perth to promote their new CD Zounds. Only a few things can be said about this set, the guitar work and vocals of this band are an incredible thing to witness live. They played songs that spanned their whole career as well as new tracks from Zounds. The crowd reacted best to Fire, Fire, Fire and also the single The Price.
Leaving the venue most were amazed by the raw talent this band has, and punters all around were heard commenting on how privileged we were to see them live, as they have not been to Perth in some time. They made up for their absence by playing a good gig, with a mixture of both old and new songs, with both old and new fans content.
