Gun Street Girls, Whiskey GoGo's, The Cheats @ EastBrunswick Club, Melbourne(28/8/09)

The Cheats new album Hats of to the Cheats is a mess of blazing rock and roll spliced with soulful rock vocals. The power that these two guys conjure up is equivalent of a force 5 hurricane, they rip the audience apart and drop them on their arse, the crowd are then left to pick them themselves up and dust themselves off, The Cheats have mastered that scuzzy blues rock sound and are well deserving of bigger things.

Next band up was the Whiskey Go Go’s. In the past they had an interesting sound but something seemed to be lacking as they went through the motions. But the lead singer has got that country blues howl down pat and tonight’s set it seemed like a very different band all together. They’ve lost that Gothic country sound and become a band that takes all the elements of who they were – country, blues, rock and roll -and come up with a whole new sound.

Headlining act The Gun Street Girl’s took no time into ripping the stage apart, they ran into the crowd head first and didn’t come for air for about half and hour it was an onslaught of relentless rock and roll. The Gun Street Girls is the new act for Dave Larkin of Dallas Crane fame and two thirds of the Double Agents, this partnership came into fruition when Dave was touring overseas with the Double Agents, obviously something clicked when he was hanging out these guys – the partnership has payed off ten fold.

Dave Larkin is one of country’s best front men. Dallas Crane always leave you salivating with a thirst for banging rock and roll, and The Gun Street Girls are no different with their full force straight up rock and roll. Their debut self titled album is a smashing meld of everything that is good about Aussie rock and roll, belting the listener in the head, with the pounding sounds and don’t give up until there lying on the ground begging for more.

Dave has such a great knack of revving up the audience with his on stage banter, his love for the music is very reflective with on stage rapport with the other band member’s, it was a great showcase for the album. Tonight’s set was a good indicator that the Gun Street Girls aren’t just a side project but a fully fledged new band; don’t miss them if they play over summer.
