Sunday nights in Canberra aren’t usually much of an exciting time, but last Sunday the Trilogy Tour came to the capital and completely shredded up the place. The Trilogy tour headlined by the Dukes of Windsor and accompanied by Trial Kennedy and those Kiwi folk Midnight Youth. With a 23 date tour, Canberra was lucky enough to get the ninth date at the ANU Bar.

Unfortunately the event was not taken advantage of by music-lovin’ Canberra peeps, with only 14 presale tickets being sold and all up only about 50 people on the night. However, those who didn’t come missed out on an incredible night.

First up, Midnight Youth jumped on the stage and warmed up the small crowd. With a slight indie-pop feel, the five piece band gave the audience catchy beats and awesome guitar skills. Using the lighting to their advantage, the Kiwi’s were an excellent choice to start the night, and are ones to look out for when they next hit our shores.

Next up was Trial Kennedy, those heavy rockers from Melbourne. Obviously enjoying themselves and the tour, the boys played around with the audience, at one point asking for a pool cue, then making the drummer use it as a drumstick. He did quite well, despite the efforts of the rest of the band to make him speed up and break the stick. Using this great rapport with the audience, Trial Kennedy interspersed a heavy set with telling stories from the tour and thanking the crowd for a good time. The four piece band put their roadies/ other bands to good use, putting them on lighting and sound duties.

Trial Kennedy’s singer Tim Morrison deserves a special mention, having one hell of a voice and putting even the most seasoned and respected international stars to shame. Being able to hold his notes and sound like a harder Jeff Buckley is quite the achievement; something Morrison does with ease. Ending the second week of touring with a great set, Trial Kennedy assured Canberra they would love to be back very soon.

Next up were the headliners, those pretty boys with a rocking sound, Dukes of Windsor. Using electro beats and rocking instruments, the Dukes amazed the ANU Bar and gave everyone the energy to carve up the floor. The Others, the song that made them famous, got a much-enthused change up and was one of the highlights of their set.

The band’s manic style of playing obviously rubbed off on the crowd, as the audience grew and the dance moves got more ambitious. By the end of the set most of the other bands were on stage, playing along with their own instruments or just having a great time dancing and bouncing around. This behaviour could annoy anyone else, but the Dukes loved the company and ruckus.

Finishing with an encore and the notice that “We don’t have anymore, sorry guys”, Dukes of Windsor tore up ANU Bar, and along with their touring buddies, gave Canberra an amazing night.
