I Heart Hiroshima, DZ @Transit Bar, Canberra,(13/08/09)
Fri 14th Aug, 2009 in Gig Reviews
Walking in to the funky sounds of a DJ filling the room, the Transit Bar steadily got busier and busier as the night wore on last Thursday night. Being a reasonably warm night compared to Canberra standards, most people decided outside with fresh air was the place to be while waiting for the music to arrive.
Coming up to 9pm however, the crowd started to get impatient, making it obvious by the amount of alcohol being consumed and cigarettes being smoked. Finally, Brisbane band DZ started the ball rolling at 9.30pm, finishing their beers and jumping on the stage.
With only two guys making up DZ, it would be easy to assume the worst. However, as soon as the sticks hit the skins, every single person in Transit was mesmerised. Fantastic guitar skills and a killer drummer, the Brisbane band had the crowd in their hands throughout the whole set. Head banging and rocking music were the order of the night, with simple catchy lyrics and White Stripes-esque beats. Showing Canberra a rocking great time, DZ is a band to watch out for in the near future.
Heading towards the end of the night, headliners I Heart Hiroshima took to their instruments at 10.30. With an enthusiastic greeting from the androgynous girl singer/drummer, the three piece band started their set in a rocking swing. Decidedly lighter than the previous band, I Heart Hiroshima take influence from The Grates and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
Upbeat singing and light drumming got the crowd swaying in time, but unfortunately by that time, alcohol and/or fatigue had affected most people and there was a waning energy floating around.
Having told the audience that no one had spoken to them about fireworks or porn yet, I Heart Hiroshima finished their set with one last rocking tune, presumably wanting to chat up locals and find out the best spots for getting crackers and skin-mags.
