For a first show, the Distorted Crew were suprisingly calm and organised, the lighting is set, the bar is stocked and the bands are loading in and the guys are casually hanging out together and sharing pizza and makeup tips before their band briefing.
The group is part of the Promozone program, where a group of young people who are obsessed with with music, the arts and fashion get together once a week to organise various events including concerts, fashion parades and music festivals. The events are planned by young people, for young people
First up on the ‘rub’ sheet was Within Reason, a young 5 piece Punk/Screamo band who recently shared a stage with Skintilla. The boys took to the stage with confidence and set to start the night right…unfortunately due to a smoke machine mishap (was funny at the time) only vocalist Tait was visible for the first part of the set. As the smoke settled the guys continued to play without a hitch, with This is not the end getting the crowd moving, and Heaven’s Gates slowing it down.
Not for the Innocent, complete with 20 man crew, were up next. Desire has an absolutely awesome voice, i definately wasnt expecting that kind of sound. The Broken and the Weak track was a standout, as well as a cover track that really showed what these guys can do. There was also a ‘dedication’ to a very special ex in the crowd…the look on his face was priceless, im guessing he had never heard it before?
From the North Eastern Suburbs, Princess Drive took the half way slot. The 3 piece have been playing together for 3 years and are now getting some shows under their belt. The Alternative Rock and melody combination was a hit, Don’t let this go has a great feel to it.
Sometime soon were sneaky. We werent sure what they were up to. What sounded like part of their set was actually just them doing sound check and warming up. It was an unbelievable long warm up, but worth it i guess. Sharing equipment and band members with TBC made things even more confusing. But they were great, even with a cover of that incredibly annoying Love Story song.
Last to take the stage were Taken by Chance. These guys have way too much energy and should be kept in a warehouse for testing. In a strange turn of events, Drummer Nick lost his pants ( I though it best not to ask how), and unfortunately had to play in extremely pretty love heart pajama pants. He wasn’t alone though, joined on stage by a guitarist in a flattering lace slip.
Kicking off with That Day it was just one long cordial fueled hyperactive mosh. At one point there was a guitarist change (2 guitarists, one guitar) mid strum, they didnt miss a beat. We were treated to a new song The Kind of Boy I am before a cover of When you say nothing at all (which made me hate the original even more for not being as good as the cover.) before finishing the night with Reece’s Ex. The guys then stuck around to help the Distorted Crew with clean up.
Keep an eye out for Within Reason, Not for the Innocent and Princess Drive when they join 13 other bands for the NSS Battle of the Bands School competition, first heat on August 27th!
The general mood was that the show was a success, with people asking when the next show would take place. (From what i heard, that will be Elizapalibrary, Oct 8th )
The crew sat down for their debrief, and every one of them was smiling.
And that’s what it’s all about.
