Having entered Rocket Room for the first time, one cannot be anything but blown away. This is the original music bar. It is small enough to be intimate, but still large enough to produce magnificent sound and atmosphere. The red backdrop on stage gives a very David Lynch-esque feel to it all, and one cannot help but think: “Hells yes, whatever is playing here is going to be a success!” which was the case for Friday’s big happening, the WA Gold launch.
With five equally rocking bands blasting our brains out with their aggressive riffs and their more or less lovely offensive lyrics it is hard to pinpoint anything in particular, they were just all awesome. However, some animals are more awesome than others, and that night, Project Mayhem was the winner. Cal Peck and the Tramps are equally fun to watch every time they play, The Bible Bashers charmed everyone’s pants off with their talk about our dark skinned brothers superior extremities (and the singer had a killer Charles Manson t-shirt), FAIM Project (the band formerly known as Sixgun) pulled a set angry enough to get everyone dancing and the Kuillotines had the first three rows headbanging in a heartbeat.
...but, Project Mayhem took it all a step further. Halfway hrough the first song, frontman Benny Mayhem was down on the floor, his shirt open and dancing with the audience. It was sex, drugs and rock and roll on a whole new level, rarely seen since Elvis himself stopped jiggling his pelvis on stage, it was so freaking impressive, there was not a dry seat in the house (most of the audience were standing anyway).
The only big disappointment of the night was that the stock of free cds which punters were promised upon entry, had not arrived yet.
I put my name down. Benny Mayhem, where is my cd?
