Mammal @ Fowlers Live,Adelaide (24/07/09)

Everywhere I looked, there were metal t-shirts and stinky dreadlocks (someone should invent Dread Deodorant) on what was set to be a huge night. Support acts Day13 and Jerrico were first to heat up Fowler’s for this sold out show.

Poetikool Justice were up next, Taking the stage dressed in extremely revealing Joker and Symbiote Spiderman (it’s a whole nuther Spiderman, trust me) costumes. With Tom Victory of the Fraud Millionaires filling in for Mitchy, who was apparently is in hospital in Melbourne due to a snowboarding accident; the guys had not had much of a chance to jam together. You couldn’t tell.

These guys always put on a fantastic show, getting the crowd worked up and involved and tonight was no different; at one point, they had people sitting silently on the floor as they moved amongst them. The PJ’s managed to find some new fans at this show, with the metal heads getting down and bopping away to the reggae/hip-hop/funk fusion with a flexibility that sees them successfully supporting a wide genre of acts. Their set, including Joys of Life, Hoo Haa Funk, (from their album Ground Level ) was energetic and fun, although there wasn’t as much room on stage for them to really let loose. Add the PJ Boys to your list of must see’s.

In their first ever sold out Adelaide show, Mammal was hitting it hard from the second they stepped on the stage, powering straight through The Majority, followed by Hell Yeah,Nagasaki in Flames and Clear Enough.

For Mr Devil the band was on stage minus singer, who had managed to get to the back of the room and was standing on the sound box, sharing the – œlove’ with his fans. A few new tracks snuck in, with the set closing with Smash the Pinata.

For one song, a fan was pulled out of the crowd to play guitar; – œCam’, you rocked mate, well done! For once, someone who claimed to be able to play, actually could, and looked like he loved doing it. – œThis is the problem with Guitar Hero’, said Ezekiel – œif Cam had been playing that shit, he wouldn’t have been ready for this moment’.

Mammal has a presence on stage that I haven’t seen in a while, Fowler’s was buzzing with the energy they supplied. This was my first time seeing them live, I cant wait for the next, although it may be a while due to the band’ having overseas tour commitments.

In what was a fairly passionate political address, vocalist Ezekiel made mention of his flag, stating – œWhat has this country ever done for these people. They have done plenty to the people.’

He then moved on to Peter Garrett, Federal Environment Minister and former front man of Midnight Oil – a band strongly identified with environmental and political causes, who recently sold out by approving a new Uranium mine in SA. – œGreat songs don’t mean fuck all to those people that are about to lose their homes.’ His message was enough that the crowd was cheering, and discussing the issue after the show.
