On a foggy night in Canberra while many were packing their bindles to head up north for a splendourific weekend, The Basics dropped into Transit Bar braving the sub zero temperatures and two hundred inebriated UC students on their annual pub crawl.
Kicking things off in Canberra style were locals and Triple J Unearthed Trackside winners Hancock Basement. Since winning the coveted Unearthed title these boys have been flying high earning some of the most desirable support slots around the country. Buttering up the audience with their creamy indie pop, the boys had the crowd eating out of the palm of their hands.
Hitting the stage just as the wave of school uniform clad uni students hit the bar The Boat People, although barely audible over the giggly and excited students, kept the night flowing and the dance moves a-coming. Playing songs of their latest release Chandeliers we heard songs from the Boaties such as Babynake and the favourite tongue twisted Awkward Orchid Orchard.
The Boaties thanked the crowd for hanging out down front with their iphones and hi-fives and moved aside to make way for The Basics. The three piece featuring Wally de Backer of Gotye fame made the overly tipsy crowd feel warm and welcome with their delightfully familiar sounds. The Melbourne lads have been around the traps for the better half of a decade but it’s been only recently, possibly due to the skyrocketing success of de Backers solo efforts (apologies to the devoted Basics fans out there) that the Basics have hit the airwaves with the force required to fill an averagely attended bar on a cold Thursday night.
Their set comprised of songs from their last release, some new material and featured a couple of covers of which The Basics have become well known for. Quite obviously enjoying themselves on the tiny stage the lads belted out a bevy of enjoyable tunes including a cover of the Sonics hit Have Love Will Travel. The crowd dusted off their vocal chords for a sing-a-long to Just Hold On as Mr de Backer treated the audience to one stunning drum solo after another. After many weeks on high rotation on Triple J, the latest single for the boys This Ship also featured on the set list.
While the hoards may be heading down to Splendour for the weekend, the boys will continue up to Queensland on their tour with The Boat People in tow for the next week or so. A memorable night for most (minus the tartan adorned UC mob), if you’re not one of the chosen ones bathing in music glory in Belongil Fields, you may be able to catch a glimpse of The Basics in Brisbane or on the Sunshine Coast over the next week.
