There was a weird vibe in the air tonight and it was even stranger at the Governor Hindmarsh with Jake Grigg and the Something With Numbers boys overseeing the madness.

I don’t think I have ever seen such fervour for crowd surfing as what was displayed by this out of control crowd who started off fairly quiet but by the end of the gig where more interested in the act of surfing, and a little bit of fighting, than what was happening on stage, unless they were invading the stage and helping out on vocals.

Despite the crowd antics Something With Numbers put on a very fine show covering the gamut of new and old and of course including the massive Stay With Me Bright Eyes, 89 Freedom Street, Twisted and Diamonds from their Engineering the Soul album. All tracks you just can’t help shimmying your shoulders along with Grigg as he shimmies all over the stage. The extra special treat though was a live version of the track the boys played last week on Triple J’s Like A Version. The mash up of Kings of Leon’s Sex on Fire and Cypress Hill’s Hits from the Bong was awesome and the band themselves seemed quite surprised at just how well received it was.

In support were fellow New South Wales Central Coast band, Slow Down Honey who by all accounts were fantastic, however I only caught the end of the set due to the early mid-week start time. What I did hear though was big and sounded pretty good and I look forward to hearing more from this band.

It was then time to step back in time to the 80’s. The Galvatrons took to the stage with their anthemic 80’s style cock rock. Johnny Galvatron is one of the best front men around and I suspect has been practising his sneer and persona, which is part Billy Idol, part Joey Tempest and part David Lee Roth for many years.

Launching in with She’s In Love the set also included Donnie’s On TV from their earlier EP which also includes one of the most played songs last year, When We Where Kids, as well as tracks from the brand new album Laser Graffiti including the new single Cassandra.

The Galvatrons are true rocks stars, they have the huge synth rock 80’s sound and they have the hair rock moves mixed in with a massive dose of irony which means you just can’t help dancing and having fun, which is what it’s all about isn’t it?
