Through the history of music, there are several acts made up of only brothers who have had an amazing rate of success. To mention one, Jackson Five, debut act of the late Michael Jackson, consisted of him and all his brothers. They killed on the Billboard top 100, and is today, nearly 40 years later considered an epic act in the music industry.
On that note, two of the bands who entered the stage at Amplifier last friday were made up of brothers. First one off, Homebrewe, (according to their lead singer the e stands for energy) rocked the few but eager who dared to enter Amps before nine pm. With Kohen Grogan on energic, sometimes eccentric and awkwardly sexy vocals, backed up by his older brother Casey, and younger brother Dylan, with an aspiring drummer best friend Rory Keys, it is obvious that these guys know what they like, and they go right ahead and do it. Their texts are radio-friendly, their tunes are blasting, and they definitely bring it. The only fuss there is to kick up about Homebrewe is that they are just a little to cute. In a few years, when Kohens voice is crisp from a little more whisky and the boys have grown some facial hair, they are gonna reach to the astronomical version of the top.
Peverall was the second act to go on stage. Playing a very melodic somewhat acoustic hard rock, Peverall is the perfect music to chill out to. They made a great transition from Homebrewes post rock, to a more mature, refined rock and roll. Lead singer Troy Peverall has the type of charisma you see at dingy bars in Hollywood films, and though that might seem like an insult, it really is not, as the cream of the crop is usually selected for those kinds of roles.
The Mandurah based band with the somewhat exotic name: Sneaky Weasel Gang was second last on stage, and the boys kept a funky yet rocking rythm throughout their set. On their MySpace it reads that the boys have clocked about 300 gigs till now, and this is easy to see as the synergy between them makes for great fun to watch! Jason Bale has an amazing voice and the boys definitely earned their “Best Funk Act” WAMington!
At the end of the night, time had come for Sneaky Weasel gang to leave the floor to Stellas Kitchen, who were the men of the hour so to speak. Second family act of the night, Stellas Kitchen displayed the same safety, confidence and stability Homebrewe has on stage, only even stronger. Both their music and lyrics are filled with the same strength and confidence, and their performance is breathtaking.
All in all this night at Amplifier was a strong proof that spite recession, and all the other instabilities in the world supposedly affecting music, Perth rock is alive and kicking. Myth busted.
