The Michael Jackson songs on the PA had a lot of people singing along quietly to themselves, but this was no tribute to the king of pop – tonight was about rock and roll.

There were a group of teenagers directly in front of the lead mic, and as Sydney band The Scare came onstage, one of the girls shoved her beer at frontman Kiss Reid. He drank most of it and gave it back to her, and launched into an amazing set. There was cowbell, plenty of bass, and it was a very energetic performance, even though Kiss said he was sick. Despite the garbled vocals, they were pretty awesome, even if the people climbing on the stage throughout the set.

Around eleven o’clock, Adelaide band Wolf & Cub hit the stage, and opened with The Loosest of Gooses, a number that had the crowd moving from the beginning. The presence of two kits (one decked out with percussion instruments) made for an interesting visual, as well as an amazing sound. Next song was Rozalia Bizarre from their first album, with percussionist Marvin Hammond on sax.

What Are They Running contained a brilliant drum/percussion duo (Marvin, and other drummer Joel Carey) with a cool light show that continued throughout the set. One to the Other and Seven Sevens were followed by crowd favourite This Mess, as frontman Joel Byrne pointed out punters who should have been dancing more and causing the band to – œwork harder’ for their love.

Restless Sons, Hearts and Steal Their Gold rounded out the set and the band disappeared offstage for all of a minute, before coming back on to do Vessels as an encore.

It was a great gig with both The Scare and Wolf & Cub proving to be must-see bands.
