I rock up early to The Hi-Fi only to endure a twenty minute security-directed pavement crawl before The Getaway Plan’s final Brisbane date of their farewell tour.

Less than an hour after doors opened, Wherewolves have already smashed through their opening slot and Elora Danan are halfway into theirs. They sound like Alexisonfire in their quieter moments and do a fine job of keeping kids entertained.

The Amity Affliction kick off their set with a minute of electro-twilight musings before their double-kick screamo assault reaches full throttle. Despite having seen them play many a show over the past few years, it’s difficult to pick songs from the noisy onslaught. Frontman Joel Birch jumps into the crowd and incites a clapping riot for Heart Throbsy. Their signature tune is a mix of brutal hardcore and poptastic vocal melodies, underpinned by relentless double kick. Awesome.

It’s nice to see The Hi-Fi packed to the rafters and I watch from upstairs as The Getaway Plan make their entrance. The merchandise cell is doing a roaring trade when the band kicks out Streetlight straight into New Medicine, A Lover’s Complaint and Sleep Spindles. Red Flag seems heavy at the prospect of never being played again, but a keyboard-less Shadows rolled out at super swift speed lightens the mood with its singalong moments. Where The City Meets The Sea is weaker live than on record but all is forgiven when the hooky chorus comes around. Rhapsody On A Windy Night is a fitting closer with soaring vocals, hard-hitting chorus and “burn all your bridges” lyrics.

Why are The Getaway Plan breaking up when they could have put a few more runs on the board? Frontman Matthew Wright has formed emotive indie duo Young Heretics with girlfriend and vocalist Kitty Hart. Is this a John & Yoko situation? Perhaps. Guitarist Clint Splattering looks set to follow a heavier path than The Getaway Plan, forming Avalanche for Aeris, and it remains to be seen what’s in store for the other constituents of one of Australia’s foremost rock bands of recent years.

Nobody has hearted this, be the first!
