Woden Youth Centre put together yet another fun night of talent and variety this week. The night started off perfectly, nothing too heavy and nothing too soft just enough of both. Turbulence got the crowd gathered around the stage with some grungy guitar and pounding drums to back it up. The first song Sunrise, had a little of everything, rock, punk, indie and some soft melodies which they managed to work into most songs.

One highlight of the evening was local youngsters AstroChem. These audacious fellows owned the stage, delivering a variety of sounds. Along with the usual band instruments, guitar, drums and bass was the lead singer’s keyboard, with pure talent and fascinating combinations; they were able to create all kinds of vibes throughout the set. Lead singer Henry, strutted on stage with utter confidence wearing a stylish captains’ jacket which had to be removed as the cold winter night was heated up by the bands stealthy performance. Dedicating and naming a song after his brother Bayard, Henry busted out with strong vocals along with the bands impressive psychedelic style and maintained strength in every song after that. You could taste the energy and feels its effect.

The quality of music and sounds were consistent throughout the night. Everyone showed emotion and depth in their music, such high quality for such a small time gig. Pitch control and musical maturity was also consistent which is unusual for such young performers.

The young but civilized audience were dedicated and very intrigued by the variety of music played during the night. Some just bobbed their heads and others danced with real enthusiasm. Once Vera jumped on stage, the show did a 180 degree turn, going from psychedelic funk tunes to a crashing symbol and heavy drumming, they showed strength and passion in true hardcore style. The lead singer even took a dive into the audience and kept singing whilst lying on his back on the floor. The audience didn’t show as much enthusiasm for this band but the few that remained were there for a reason. Friends, fans and hardcore fanatics flailed arms and rock out to Vera’s intense performance.

Escape Syndrome, well known for their consistent performances showed yet another taste of their latest EP Daydream. Full of energy and crowd interaction, the band conveyed an emotional show. With an old school Incubus style, they drifted between soothing melodies and screamo chorus lines, bringing a grungy style to add to the night.

To conclude the evening, Paqman re-arranged the stage and without a word started with a beat. This beat turned into a magical combination of sounds that created a whole new atmosphere. This progressive electronic duo busted out with some heavy beats and high pitched beeps, and so much more. Think about a war zone, throw in a little house party and a pinch of inner city bustle, and those are the sounds they used to create a killer electronic dance mix. Moving around the stage between the laptop, loop station and synthesizer type machines, their fingers worked the crowd and beyond.

Some emotionally driven tracks spilt out onto the audience and back through the speakers like a cycle of not stop vibes throughout the room. With obvious influences like Chemical Brothers or Daft Punk, they even threw in a few recognisable tunes like Daft Punk’s Technologic, but not as it is known. The boys threw in a huge mix of their own stuff, turning songs upside down and inside out, spinning the room with masses of style and steezy tunes to go all night.

All in all the night presented a huge amount of talent, if only everyone knew what was going on in this town. Such variety and versatility came from the stage and entertained a young crowd that only grew into an all aged event. No one seemed displeased. Canberra’s youth have raised the bar, yet again.
