So, The Amenta didn’t want to venture over for the western leg of Unleashing the Extreme. They didn’t really need to; their absence did little to deter people as the notorious head liner has quite a following in Perth.
Ruins are a black metal outfit from Tasmania and, it seems, good mates of Psycroptic. Joining them onstage was brotherly duo Joe and Dave Haley. Aside from the stellar addition to the lineup, Ruins are a great black metal band in their own right. Sounding like a cross between Witchery and Satyricon, Ruins earned a decent response from the crowd, and left most punters and die hard fans satisfied. Dave Haley’s drum skills shone through though, treating people to a lesson in double kick drumming.
After a relativly quick changeover, Psycroptic took the stage to an ecstatic crowd. They played an amazing set; the lads seem to raise the bar every time. The staple opener, A Calculated Effort blew the
roof off, As did Isle Of Disenchantment, Initiate and Skin Coffin. Horde In Devolution again blew minds with that unmistakable riff, and they finished the perfectly constructed set with The Colour of Sleep.
Psycroptic well and truly stole the show. Nothing was out of place, it was a perfected barrage of extreme death metal.
The crowd left satisfied and content with such a flawless performance.
This band has really hit their stride in the last few years, the hat must go off to Soundworks for nurturing such a talent into the behemoth they are today. It’s easy to see why they were picked up by German label Nuclear Blast, as they are without a doubt, the finest death metal band Australia has to offer, and global domination is imminent.
