I’ll admit I went to Ladytron in a not particularly optimistic mood, partly because Ladytron just now seem a little just…uncool. I’d been listening to their new songs on Myspace and they were catchy, but just a little so-so, a little irrelevant after getting into electro like Crystal Castles and Digitalism and seeing Daft Punk.
Anyway my lack of optimism was rebutted. There was music I wanted to hear, primarily, the song Ladytron walked out to, none other than Livin’ Thing, by Electric Light Orchestra. Yess! By the way, Ladytron are babes. Apparently they all used to be models or something, in case you didn’t pick up on that.
So they walked out, all babe-like and the – œTron (an abbreviation that makes them sound like some kind of terminator robot, I hope no one ever seriously calls them that) launched straight into some songs from their new album. Maximum song, minimum smile. They played Black Cat and Ghost , Runaway and Tomorrow (which I’ve had in my head for about three days now) and a whole bunch more.
Ladytron are good live, they’re really polished but not in the kind of depthless way their recording tends to make them sound. They had a lot more throb and thump live and they’re the kind of accessible poppy music that doesn’t need much getting into. But I felt like their new songs just kind of tred water between commercial success and indie cred. It’s a little too generic to be quite special, yet not poppy enough to really be hits. I kept wishing they’d go a bit more psychedelic, especially with the vocals.
The rest of the crowd really seemed to enjoy themselves which was nice, though I thought Ladytron’s stage demenour could have been a little more exciting. Except for the singer with the brown hair – she had this really endearing awkward kind of dancing-jig that she hopped around the stage too.
They played Seventeen last, and it actually was awesome. I feel bad saying it was the best song of the night but it was. They played an encore but it was some dreary song, the worst of the night, and we left before they finished. Ladytron are cooler than I thought, but not so cool you’d hang around for an average encore.
