It’s quite hard to feel claustrophobic in The Corner Hotel, the numerous bars, disco balls and relatively large stage make sure of this; however Saturday night was a different story. The Corner appeared to be packed to capacity five minutes after doors opened, and seeing that All Time Low and support act Set Your Goals hadn’t been in Australia for over a year it was easy to see how this was the case. Fortunately, there were few screaming teenagers (courtesy of the underage gig earlier that day), and more than enough punters set for a great night of music.

Built on Secrets were shunned to the smaller side stage near the entrance of The Corner to display a well crafted, yet unoriginal style of music. Appearing to be in their late teens, and sporting numerous references to Blink 182 and All Time Low, it was quite surprising when the music that they played was a lot darker than the pop-punk that was set to headline the evening later on. It must not be denied that the boys certainly did have talent with what they were doing, however for the future, some more originality would be needed if they were to succeed.

Stealing O’Neal officially started the show on the main stage, providing fans (surprisingly, quite a few) with a mix of all their tracks. Collide provided a strong sing along from the crowd, however it was obvious through the amount of idle chatter, that everyone was simply waiting for the headliners.

The screams that preceded Set Your Goals only placed delight on the faces of the band, who began their non-stop energetic show with opener This Very Moment. Set Your Goals have capitalized on a fantastic talent; that being to create catchy, relatively simple music that leaves all wanting more. This was definitely the case on Saturday night, with the majority of The Corner singing along to tracks Goonies Never Say Die and Flight of the Navigator. Vocalist Jordan Brown tried numerous times to start a circle bit (from 20 seconds into their set), however the size and makeup of The Corner proved difficult- these pits would last for no more than 15 seconds.

When comparing Set Your Goals performance with their show back in 2008 on the Boys of Summer tour, it was evident that something was missing. Perhaps it was the fact that the boys had already played a show a few hours earlier, but they didn’t seem to display the raw energy that existed last time they were there. Regardless, the smile on vocalist Matt Wilson’s face as he informed the crowd that – œWe’re Set Your Goals…we’re so happy to be here right now’, or the sweat that poured off Brown’s body showed that they were still giving it their all.

There were numerous plugs in regards to their new record, and after being given a taste of new track Summer Jam, which Brown dedicated to – œThe Lord of the Fries’, it was obvious that this record is going to be amazing when it drops.

Work in Progress and To be Continued were favourites for the night, evident by the crowd interaction. Despite a few technical issues with Brown’s microphone during these songs (many couldn’t hear him); the vocal response from the crowd was enough to make up for it.

After announcing that the band would be back early next year (Speaking to Wilson after the show, it can be confirmed that Set Your Goals will almost certainly be playing Soundwave 2010, and if not, will be coming down for their own headlining tour), the boys finished with Mutiny. At the conclusion of this song Richmond gave the boys a rapturous applause; which they deserved.

To the delight of all, All Time Low hit the stage, opening with 6 Feet Under the Stars. Whilst the boys later revealed that – œwe decided to take the time to get drunk in Melbourne’, their performance was incredibly tight, with Alex Gaskarth providing crisp, near perfect vocals, and Jack, Zack and Rian showing great musical talent.

Quite appropriately, given the fact that this was the Take Action Tour, Gaskarth pointed out a fight that was going on in the middle of the mosh, and publically shamed the perpetrator: – œDude, you come to these concerts to get laid, not to fight. I don’t care what he did. Just leave it…I don’t want to have to deal with this shit’. The audience responded to this with a polite applause, and it is safe to say that this was the final major incident of the night.

If Set Your Goals provided catchy tunes that left all singing, then All Time Low took things to a completely new level, with fan favourite tracks Shameless and Poppin’ leaving all dancing and chanting back lyrics. The hits continued with Jordan from Set Your Goals joining the boys on stage to assist with vocal duties.

The boys appear to be completely at ease with what they do, creating a presence that seeps of confidence (However the fact that they stated to be drunk could be the reasoning for this). There was no lack of interaction with the crowd, with Alex and Jack providing continuous (which in most instances, resulted in talk about boobs, dicks or mum jokes). This was no different with Jack’s intro to Holly: – œThis song is about a blowjob…in the back of a Subaru…Alex’s mum’s Subaru!’ Think it couldn’t get any worse? Jack continued: – œExcept it wasn’t Alex’s mum in the car…it was his dad.” Hey, If Blink 182 are planning on maturing on their upcoming tour, at least the immature among us can turn to All Time Low.

After a quick toilet break and a cover of Rihanna’s Umbrella Melbourne had its first – œflash’ for the night. Forget the energetic nature of the crowd, perfect sound of the venue or the fact that a large percentage of the crowd was embraced, singing along the lyrics to all of the band’s songs, the fact that they saw boobs seemed to bring the most excitement to the band.

New single Weightless followed the bands plug for their album (July 7), which Alex urged us to buy – œor just download illegally…I know you will’. Dear Maria was obvious closer to the night, which ended with Dan and Audelio from Set Your Goals taking over Guitar duties, whilst Jack took a leap of faith into the crowd as Alex remained on vocals.

Both All Time Low and Set Your Goals have always delighted Australian audiences with their laid back, high energy and incredibly entertaining shows (the fact that two shows in Melbourne sold out completely is evidence of this). With both bands releasing records within the next month, it is likely that we will be seeing them on our shores in the near future. It’ll be interesting to see what they bring to the table next time around.
