The Rocket Room was host to a different and more mature crowd this weekend, with the launch of Genghis’ new single Smoke Stacks.
Blac Blocs were up first and promised the small crowd they would ‘rock out with their cocks out’.
Luckily they didn’t.
Instead they introduced their set with a kind of yelling that was hard to understand. The guitar riffs were pretty good, but unfortunately the weird vocals and seagull impersonations drowned out the instruments and the crowd was left wondering what had just happened.
The Leap Year took a while to set up, then played a pretty run-of-the-mill set. The songs were largely instrumental with good dynamics, which was an intelligent decision by the band, as the vocals were not particularly impressive.
The standard beat of the night continued with Capital City, as did the trend towards less-than-adequate-vocals. They kept the crowd a little more alive with a couple of rockier songs…one in particular sounding like it was going to be ‘Oh Mickey you’re so fine…’
Genghis upped the anti when they appeared on stage, rocking out immediately with lots of energy. The vocal standard improved, with some interesting effects in Evil that emphasised the femininity of singer, Zoe James’ voice.
Unfortunately they didn’t actually introduce which song was their new single Smoke Stacks. A lot of loyal supporters were there to lend their ears, but many left disappointed after a gig with nothing special worth mentioning.
