The Folkus Room at the Canberra Italo Australian Club hosted one of this years most entertaining acts. Reggie Watts provided intelligent comedy and witty songs and the laughs didn’t stop there. Sitting on the stage humbly sharing stories and past-times, he undoubtedly shook the room up. Everyone was in hysterics and eagerly bopped to the songs created solely by a loop station and Reggie’s killer vocal beats.

The Seattle based artist referred to Ireland, the US and many more countries in recognition of the show, it was somewhat confusing as Watts kept changing the country we were in, but hilarious all the same. His funky grooves and beat box skills were stylish and creative. The sounds that came from his mouth represented his true talent. Switching between rapper style and soft caressing soul and then into a high pitched skeet scat.

With a truly intellectual approach, the improvisation was beyond comedy at times it was so outrageous it almost made sense. The hilarity of the content was just too hard to decipher, so it just got funnier and funnier. Pausing to stroke the microphone stand, the show then broke out into a fabulous array of beats, breaks and familiar song lyrics and a tone that could cure any bout of seriousness.

The hair-do was definitely the pinnacle part of his look. Overruling his lack of dress sense, the artist had no fault in his appearance, it showed a confidence and carefree attitude which was reflected in his performance.

The venue held up a high standard in sound quality, seating arrangement and an environment suited to the performer creating a scene much like an underground comedy club, very appropriate. The variety of audience members showed Canberra’s diverse interest in music and the arts, everyone was enjoying the show, it was very hard not to.

Bill Arnett, Director of The Folkus Room kept the crowd laughing with some hearty – œin between’ comedy and with a distinct appearance he is very hard to miss.

Keeping a somewhat political theme, mentioning climate change and its obvious solution – Ghost buster suits – scientific theories and molecular make up of things, the seemingly intellectual babble kept the night alive. One obvious fan managed to get up on stage and bust out a rap to some of Watts’ beats, trying to fade the song out, this enthusiastic audience member pursued her freestyle rap and gave the rest of the audience a taste of her skills.

As friends sat together enjoying a night full of fun babbling comedy, stylish tunes, strange topics and the like, it kept stomachs in knots, eyes glued, everyone was truly entertained by the comedic genius that is, Reggie Watts.
