Last Wednesday night, Canberra kids were left with a dilemma. What to do? Get out the disco boots and colour it up with The Presets, or get out those rock-it-hard boots and spend the night with Cog? The nation’s capital went 50/50 and fans of Cog saw a great night ahead.

It was an awkward experience for many punters upon arrival to the venue, as it is quite unusual to have to sign into a gig. Instead of the usual university gig, they chose to have the location down south at the Canberra Hellenic Club. A strange location? No, not really. Flynn said the band “needed a change” and the club proved that is capable of accommodating for musical events, large and small.

Starting the show was Melbourne out-fit, Calling All Cars with their creation of alternative punk rock worthy of Green Day. Their music seemed to touch on elements of Gyroscope – maybe they got some advice from the guys as they toured with them last year? Calling All Cars couldn’t have picked a better time to release this punk-rock material as punk makes a comeback with NOFX, Jane’s Addiction and Green Day releasing material this year.

Once the boys had wrapped up their set, the room which looked too big became more and more full. It was sad to see those rockers leave the stage. The crowd shortly after became very rowdy chanting out Cog’s name.

Thankfully, right on cue Luke, Flynn and Lucius came out on to stage. Unlike the previous act, Cog provides stand-out themes and signatures within their music and performance. Take for example, Flynn’s double mic, guitar pedals, odd guitar tunings and his deep and powerful vocals. As well as popular drummer boy, Lucius with his massive drum kit, and – Å“whooping’ drum beats. And last but not least their various forms of facial hair.

The diversity of the crowd was striking. Die-hard fans were in awe of the bands older tracks including Doors and Silence Is Violence. While those fresher to the Cog bandwagon were lapping up Bird of Feather and What If. Either way there was hardly a moment when the crowd near the front weren’t jumping around violently or singing along to their fav tunes.

Flynn thanked his audience for their support over the years saying that Cog would definitely be back again soon. Cog’s return is welcome, where are they going to play next though, Parliament House?
