Some people say rock is dead. Others say punk is dead. When you meet someone who is so niche in their interests that they tell you that revival glam rock is dead, point them in the direction of The Galvatrons.

They, along with The Salvages, and Thomy and the Tanks, made Thursday night a night to wear your influences on your sleeve, a night to abuse your sister’s (let’s face it, YOUR) can of hairspray, and to find the tightest pair of jeans you have. Again, maybe your sister’s.

Fronting up first were Goulburn’s finest, Thomy and the Tanks. Equal parts glam, gutter, and gratuitous cock rock, these guys showed why they’ve been picked up to support The Galvatrons nationally. Not only did their tunes complement the main act, but also they had the stage show to match. Lead singer Thomy Sloane would manhandle the microphone at any given opportunity, leaving those eager enough to venture near the stage in a precarious, and possibly dangerous, position.

Second on the bill were The Salvages, who ditched the slightly pub-vibe that TATT had with them, and instead brought Sunset Strip circa-1987 to the ANU Bar, which, given the appearance of a few people there, wasn’t as big a task as expected. Nevertheless, the tunes, and attitude won over much of the crowd, with a decent number of the few who turned out up the front and enjoying the music.

Not too long after, The Galvatrons were up and the crowd filled for the grandiose Van Halen-esque sounds now playing. Lead singer Johnny showed why he’s up there as one of Australia’s premier frontmen, with his blistering solos and enigmatic vocal delivery. Not to be outdone, each other member held their own as well, with extra mention going to Canberra’s own Gamma (with his family out in force), who provided a gorgeous mid-set piano solo, which is something I never thought I’d say in a review of a glam rock band, but there you go.

Finishing up with latest single Cassandra and older hit (although, old implies the band has been around longer than a few years, which they haven’t, testament to their quality) When We Were Kids, The Galvatrons left those at the ANU Bar in a tizzy.

Regardless of whether you’re a fan of their music, I advise you to check them out, if nothing more than for a bit of entertainment, because The Galvatrons are quite something on the stage, moreso for such a – œnew’ band.
